Property Crimes

Under Rhode Island law, property crimes involve the unlawful theft, damage, destruction, or interference with a person's property.  In 2023, Rhode Island's property crime rate was 1,100 offenses per 100,000 people.  RI was ranked 46th among the 50 states.  Larceny-theft was considered the most common type of property crime committed followed by motor vehicle theft and burglary.

There are many different types of property crimes such as embezzlement, larceny, shoplifting, obtaining property by false pretenses or personation, or receiving stolen goods.  These property crimes include any and all minor crimes such as trespass to serious crimes such as arson.  The following are a list of common property crimes:  larceny, trespassing, vandalism, theft, burglary and arson.  The penalties for a person convicted of a property crime can include jail, restitution, probation, community service, fines and parole.  These penalties depend upon the nature and severity of the crime in addition to the defendant's past criminal history.
